AENOR has developed a set of certifications to facilitate the plastics industry to demonstrate the application of the principles of the circular economy and achieve the objectives of the European Plastics Strategy.
The environmental awareness of society means that consumer demand is driving not only for a quality production, something that AENOR has been certifying in the field of plastics for more than thirty years, but environmentally responsible production with the available natural resources.
For this reason, AENOR, in collaboration with the Spanish Association of Industrial Plastics (ANAIP) has developed certification schemes focused on advancing and ensuring the transition of the sector towards a Circular Economy, and especially, to close the productive circle in everything related to converting plastic waste into new resources.
These "circular" certifications currently cover the receipt of the plastic waste for its treatment and putting it back on the market in the form of recycled material, the characterization of this recycled material in the form of pellets for its use and, finally, the declaration of the percentage of use of this post-consumer recycled material in a new product.
But they also include the prevention of losing plastics into the environment throughout the value chain of the plastics sector, through the certification of the Operation Clean Sweep OCS scheme, defined to prevent the involuntary loss of plastics into the environment, in the form of pellets, dust or micro plastics.
In summary, four new certification possibilities are offered to the sector:
- Traceability of waste in the plastic recycling process, in accordance with UNE-EN 15343
- Characterization of recycled material, currently available for recycled PE compound, in accordance with UNE 53978
- Percentage of content of recycled material in a production process, in accordance with UNE-EN 15343
- Zero pellet losses - Operation Clean Sweep®
